Pope Francis appoints an SVD Bishop

Fr. Joseph Tarife Durero, SVD

On May 23, 2021, the Holy Father, Pope Francis, has appointed Rev. Fr. Joseph Tarife Durero, SVD, until now Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Madang, as Bishop of the Diocese of Daru-Kiunga.

Curriculum vitae

  • Msgr. Joseph Tarife Durero, SVD, was born on April 13, 1969, in Dapa, Surigao, Philippines. He belongs to the Society of the Divine Word, for which he made his final profession on May 25, 1995. He completed his studies in Philosophy and Theology in the Philippines. He was ordained a priest in Tagaytay on December 12, 1995. He was assigned to Papua New Guinea province (PNG).

Since his ordination, he has held the following positions:

  • Assistant Pastor of Holy Trinity Parish, Bogia (1996 - 1997)
  • St. Francis Xavier Parish, Megiar (1997-1998);
  • Pastor of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus Parish, Ulingan (1999 - 2000);
  • Pastor of St. Francis Xavier Parish, Megiar (1997-1998);
  • Pastor of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus Parish, Ulingan (1999 - 2000);
  • Pastor of St. Paul Parish, Mirap (2002 - 2000);
  • Pastor of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus Parish, Ulingan (2000).
  • St. Paul Parish, Mirap (2002 - 2009);
  • District Superior, Madang (2008 - 2013) (2017 - 2019);
  • SVD Vocational Promoter in Papua New Guinea (2009 - 2010);
  • Pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish, Yomba (2010 - 2017).

Since 2013 he is the Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Madang. In 2018 he was appointed the Administrator of Madang Cathedral. From 2017 to the present, he has been a member of the Provincial Council for the province of PNG.

The Diocese of Daru-Kiunga

  • The Roman Catholic Diocese of Daru-Kiunga is a suffragan diocese of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Port Moresby.
  • It was erected Prefecture Apostolic in 1959 and elevated to a diocese in 1966.
  • A 2019 census showcases the diocese with 24.3 % (51,174) Catholics of the total population of 211,000.
  • Interestingly, there is only one diocesan priest in the diocese with 14 male religious and 15 female religious.
