Pope Francis appoints an SVD Bishop

Fr. Timothy John Norton , SVD

We are pleased to announce that at noon in Rome on November 11, 2021, His Holiness Pope Francis has appointed as Auxiliary Bishop to the Archdiocese of Brisbane, Reverend Father Timothy Norton SVD.

Curriculum Vitae:

Reverend Father Timothy John Norton, SVD, son of Mr. Joe Norton and Ms. Dawn Norton (née Spillane), was born in Sydney on July 24, 1958.

Father Timothy received his formation to religious life from 1985 to 1991, whereas, on June 1, 1986, he had his First Religious Profession. Then, between 1987 and 1989, he had his overseas training program in Mexico. Finally, on March 2, 1991, he was ordained a priest at Eastwood, Sydney.

Since his ordination to the priesthood, he has exercised various ministries and responsibilities:

  • Parochial Vicar in Mexico City, Mexico (1991-1996);
  • Spiritual Director – Prefect of Scholastics Melbourne (1998-2000);
  • SVD Director of SVD Novitiate Sydney (2001-2002);
  • Vice President Religious Australia (2008-2010);
  • Three terms as Provincial of the Australia Province (2005-2013);
  • Director of Formation and Renewal Program at the SVD Centro Ad Gentes, Nemi, Italia (2014-2020);
  • Coordinator for Activities Involving the Promotion of Interculturality (2021 to date).

The Archdiocese of Brisbane:

  • The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Brisbane in Australia covers the South East region of Queensland, Australia.
  • The population of the Archdiocese is 2,258,806 with approximately 550,000 Catholics in the area.
  • Archbishop Mark Coleridge leads the mission of the Catholic Church in the Archdiocese of Brisbane.
  • There are currently 112 parishes and 124 priests engaged in pastoral ministry.

Congratulations to Fr. Norton. His appointment is an honor and recognition of Fr. Norton and the Society of the Divine Word. While thanking God for this new gift in the Church, we pray for God's continued blessing on Fr. Norton.
