A fire destroys old St. Gregory in Steyl
The historic, venerable building Olt-St. Gregory, part of the Mission House St. Michael in Steyl, went up in flames.
In the early morning at about 5.15 a.m. (10.04.2008), neighbors noticed flames of a fire behind a window of the ground floor of Old-St. Gregory, right next to the entrance of the “museum of arms”. At once they notified the fire brigade of Venlo-Tegelen. When they arrived the flames had already reached the roof of the building. The residents of adjacent St. Gregory retirement home were at once evacuated and are temporarily housed in the Mission House St. Michael. Fortunately, no one was hurt, but the building suffered considerable damage. The water [used by the fire brigade] caused considerable damage to the objects of the museum of arms as well as to the old library which is located in the upper floor of the building and the offices of the mission museum on the ground floor. The fire brigade was able to protect the directly adjacent buildings, St. Gregory retirement home and the mission museum, but they suffered some damage by water. The room where Mother Josepha died - she is the cofoundress of the Holy Spirit Missionary sisters and will be beatified on 29.06.2008 – is located in the building where the fire occurred; it seems it is totally destroyed. The origin and cause of the fire are still unknown.
STEYL- S. Gregorio Vecchio distrutto da un incendio
Quando ho sentito la sirena dei vigili del fuoco alle 5.30 del mattino (del 10 aprile) ho pensato ai frequenti allarmi erronei del nostro impianto di allarme in caso di incendio. Il nostro sistema è collegato direttamente con i vigili del fuoco; cosi succede ogni tanto che i vigili arrivano per un allarme erroneo. Però quando ho guardato dalla mia finestra mi è venuto il panico: alte fiamme si alzavano dal tetto di S. Gregorio Vecchio.
Pochi istanti più tardi sono arrivato a S. Gregorio (casa di riposo). I vigili arrivati prima di me avevano già forzato la porta d’entrata. I confratelli dovevano essere evacuati. Sono arrivati altri confratelli. Sono andati in tutte le stanze, hanno svegliato gli anziani, alcuni dei quali stavano ancora dormendo, e in fretta hanno accompagnato tutti fuori di casa. Due giorni prima era deceduto il nostro caro confratello P. Paul Müller. In tutta fretta la sua bara è stata portata alla rimessa del giardiniere e più tardi a Venlo dall’impresa funebre. I confratelli di S. Gregorio e anche le studentesse e due coppie di artigiani che vivevano sopra il museo missionario sono andati nel salone degli apostoli (nella casa principale, S. Michele), dove è stato loro offerto un caffè per calmarli. Poco dopo è arrivato anche il sindaco di Venlo, mostrando la sua solidarietà con tutti. I vigili hanno dovuto lavorare fino a mezzogiorno per spegnere l’incendio. Secondo un giornale di oggi il danno estimato si aggira intorno a 2 milioni di Euro. Un giovane è interrogato per incendio doloso. La casa di riposo S. Gregorio non ha subito quasi nessun danno. Probabilmente già lunedì prossimo i confratelli potranno tornarvi. L’adiacente S. Gregorio Vecchio invece è distrutto totalmente. Attraverso il tetto, l’incendio si è esteso fino all’entrata del museo delle missioni. L’entrata del museo, appena ristrutturata, che doveva essere inaugurata alla metà dell’anno, è stata gravemente danneggiata dall’acqua usata per spegnere l’incendio. Possibilmente deve essere rifatta. Alcune parti dell’archivio e del deposito del museo delle missioni hanno subito lievi danni causati dall’acqua. Comunque, molte porte in quelle sezioni sono state danneggiate perché i vigili dovevano forzarne l’apertura.
I responsabili del Limburgschen Schützenmuseums (museo delle armi della provincia di Limburg), la cui sede si trova nella cappella (antica) e in alcune sezioni di S. Gregorio Vecchio, erano sconvolti dall’incendio. Tuttavia anche loro sono risusciti a salvare molti dei pezzi in esposizione, alcuni dei quali sono molto antichi.
Tutte le reti TV dei Paesi Bassi hanno dato notizia dell’incendio. Hanno ripetuto varie volte che non ci sono stati feriti o vittime. Tutti siamo molto grati per questo. Esprimiamo la nostra gratitudine ai vigili del fuoco, alla polizia e all’altro personale di soccorso per il loro intervento pronto ed efficiente. I confratelli della casa insieme al personale hanno affrontato la situazione in modo eccellente.

The fire was discovered by our neighbours shortly after 5.00 yesterday morning. The confreres in St. Gregor were all immediately brought over to St. Michael. You can imagine that some of them were very confused. But luckily no one was hurt. What was burnt is the middle part, the Moebis House between the Museum and present St. Gregor, also called Notre Dame. That is where the Schutterij Museum is. A lot of their museum pieces were destroyed by the fire and from the water that the firemen poured into the building. They say the former SSpS chapel was flooded but how badly is not known. Some student nurses are living above the museum. They too had to come over, but they were a good help with the evacuation of St. Gregor. The room where Mother Josepha died is in the part that is completely burnt out. Apparently she doesn't want it to become a shrine. The St. Gregor confreres will not be allowed to go back to St. Gregor to live and will have to move to St. Wendel as soon as they have room for them. This is also sad because there will be no gentle leave taking of what has been their home for a good number of years.
Two days before the fire Fr. Paul Muller died peacefully in St. Gregor. He got out just in time! His funeral is tomorrow.
