SVD Chile:
The aftermath of the devastating earthquake

On February 27, 2010, at 03:34 local time, a massive earthquake occurred off the coast of the Maule Region of Chile with a magnitude of 8.8 on the Richter scale and lasting for about three minutes. The damage from Chile's earthquake was widespread.

Fr. Superior General Antonio Pernia, the members of the Generalate and the Collegio community have followed closely the development of the events and the aftermath of the earthquake. Because of the break down of communication lines, it was impossible to get in touch with the Provincial of Chile and other confreres . Confreres from all corners have been very concerned about the situation of our confreres.

This is what Fr. General Antonio Pernia has received as information at the moment.

On March 2, two days after the earthquake, Fr. Carlos del Valle sent a memorandum to the confreres of the Province informing them the following:

• All our confreres, workers and the families of our Chilean confreres are safe and unhurt.
• Our SVD community residing in Los Angeles, located in the Region of Bio Bio, close to the epicenter of the earthquake has been out of reach for some time. The SVD community residence there has suffered considerable damages: the roof, the ceiling, the windows and water pipes. The school building has had several damages Assessment of these damages will be done in the next few days. Fr. Graziano Beltrami, the Rector of the school, announced that the beginning of the school year, which would have eventually started on March 1, be moved for another week.
• Two chapels of the Parish of Pallihue and the old house of Fundo Huaqui also suffered considerable damages
• The gymnasium of Colegio San Jose and other parts of the school have had minor damages
• The Escuela Industrial in El Pinar located in Santiago suffered minor damages especially the windows and the partition walls. Assessment of the damages including some cracks in the establishment needs to be evaluated.

In the next few days and weeks we will be hearing more from our confreres in Chile. In the next issue of Arnoldus Nota we will be giving a more detailed report of the aftermath of the earthquake especially the situation of our confreres.

We are profoundly shocked and concerned about the devastating earthquake in Chile as we are learning more about the tragic loss of life, injury suffered and terrible damages to the country. We stand alongside all the people of Chile, our confreres, the SSpS, SSpSAP affected by this terrible disaster in prayer, thought and action as the situation unfolds.

El 27 de febrero de 2010, a las 03:34 hora local, se produjo un terremoto frente a las costas de la Región del Maule en Chile con una magnitud de 8,8 sobre la escala Richter que duró unos tres minutos. Los daños del terremoto en Chile fueron generalizados.

El P. Superior General Antonio Pernia, los miembros del Generalato y la comunidad del Colegio han seguido de cerca el desarrollo de los acontecimientos y las secuelas del terremoto. Debido a la interrupción de las líneas de comunicación, fue imposible ponerse en contacto con el Provincial de Chile y los otros cohermanos. Los cohermanos de todas partes han estado muy preocupados por la situación de nuestros cohermanos en Chile.

Esta es la información que el P. General Antonio Pernia dispone hasta el momento.

El 2 de marzo, dos días después del terremoto, el P. Carlos del Valle envió un memorando a los cohermanos de la Provincia para informarles de lo siguiente:

• Todos nuestros cohermanos, los trabajadores y las familias de nuestros cohermanos chilenos están sanos y salvos.
• Nuestra comunidad SVD de Los Ángeles, en la Región del Bio Bio, que está situada cerca del epicentro del terremoto, ha quedado incomunicada por algún tiempo. La residencia de la comunidad SVD no ha sufrido daños considerables: el tejado, el techo, las ventanas y las tuberías de agua. El edificio de la escuela ha sufrido diversos daños cuya evaluación se hará en los próximos días. El P. Graziano Beltrami, Rector de la escuela, anunció que el comienzo del año escolar, que debería ser el 1º de marzo, será retrasado otra semana.
• Dos capillas de la Parroquia de Pallihue y la antigua casa de Fundo Huaqui también sufrieron importantes daños
• El gimnasio del Colegio San José y otras partes de la escuela han sufrido daños menores
• La Escuela Industrial en El Pinar situado en Santiago sufrió daños menores, en especial en las ventanas y las paredes divisorias. Debe hacerse la evaluación de los daños que incluyen grietas en la estructura.

En los próximos días tendremos más noticias de nuestros hermanos en Chile. En el próximo número de Arnoldus Nota daremos un informe más detallado de las consecuencias del terremoto, en especial de la situación de nuestros cohermanos.

Estamos profundamente conmocionados y preocupados por el devastador terremoto en Chile al saber de la trágica pérdida de vidas, lesiones y daños sufridos en el país. Al ir sabiéndose más sobre los acontecimientos, apoyamos con la oración, el pensamiento y la acción a todo el pueblo de Chile, nuestros cohermanos, SSpS y SSpSAP que han sido afectados por este terrible desastre.
